At several points in the descent from First Break, it is possible to stop, get out, and tour Belle Isle - a place that has a rich and only sometimes pleasant history. In the 1800s the island was a location for a race track, gambling parlors, and brothels. These uses turned to stone quarrying and other industrial uses. During the Civil War, Belle Isle was the site for a large number of federal prisoners. Enlisted men were kept on the island and officers in Libby Prison in the main part of the city. After the Civil War, Dominion Iron Works and other industries continued to use the island. After the destruction caused by the floods of 1969 and 1972, industry on Belle Isle was abandoned.
