Choo Choo and a side trip to Three-Mile Locks

Just past the railroad bridge, wefollow themain current through Choo-ChooRapid, a wide non-threatening class 2 with favorite rest and lunch stops on both river right and left. The rapid flowsover the remnants of Grant’s Dam, acrib dam of wood filled with stone. This dam which runs diagonally across theriver fed water into George Washington’s Lower Canalwhich ran into downtown Richmond.

On river left, not usually visiblefrom the river, is the Byrd ParkPump House. This station, housed in a granite Victorian Gothic building, pumpedwater up hill to the reservoir in Byrd Park. Also here are Three-Mile Locks (3 miles from the GreatBasin in downtownRichmond).
