To "Nickel Bridge" and Beyond

After leaving Choo-Choo Rapid, we follow the typical route to the right and follow the river flow around the western and southern side of Cooper’s Island. This route takes us over a sewer line constructed in 1972.  Raw sewage from this part of the city dumped untreated into the river until that time.
Not far past Cooper’s Island stands the Boulevard Bridge, also called Nickel Bridge based on its early toll price. Boulevard Bridge was built the 1920’s by developers of Westover Hills, acquired by the City in 1961, and purchased by the RMA in 1974. It was closed for a year and extensively rebuilt in 1994.
At various points along this section of the river, the Carillon is visible on river left. The Carillon is a World War I memorial. On river left,  just past the Boulevard Bridge, is Maymont Park.  This 105 acre estate was left to the City of Richmond in 1925 when the owners died. It began to flourish as an attraction after it was transferred to a foundation in 1975. It contains a small zoo, a nature center, gardens, and the mansion.  (See Maymont webpage)
