What can be used to mimic hypoxic responses in round worms?

For round worms to experience hypoxic conditions, oxygen levels have to be at almost an anoxic level(absolutely no oxygen). It is, however, difficult to run experiments at hypoxic conditions in round worms. In order to logistically make it easier to run these experiments, cobalt chloride was utilized as cobalt chloride can elicit hypoxic responses. Utilizing cobalt chloride, enabled the making of plates with the round worms in normoxic conditions while still ensuring the same result as the extreme hypoxic conditions that are required to activate the genes of interested. Figure 2 (seen in the paper), answers the question of whether or not cobalt chloride was a good substitute for low oxygen. It was further determined that cobalt chloride should be used as a primary screening tool for all further experiments. Critical experimetns and results were validated by running them in actual hypoxic conditons. The results were found through various methods such as qPCR and by using a GFP construct (can be found in the additional pages).
