Bach
Chorale #27

Go here [pdf] to download and print Bach Chorale #27. Listen and view here. Analyze this! Remember that it modulates (use roman numerals relative to the new key when you do this). Identify all suspensions, including interval numbers (ie. 4-3). When you are finished, you may check your work here: [.gif] or [.pdf].

Additional questions:

1. In Bach's harmonization, can you find any examples of retrogressions or elisions?

2. Notice any unusual chord choices?

3. What percentage of primary chords are used to harmonize this melody?

4. Why do you think Bach chose to use inversions where he did?

Go here to see just the bass and soprano together. Listen to how the counterpoint between the two voices works much like species counterpoint. Observe the shape of each line and the motion types used between them. Does his use of inversions have anything to do with any of these factors?

Be prepared to discuss these questions tomorrow! And be ready to sing!
