10/20/04 | Cut and glued up cabin slide hatch planking -
used white oak T&G floor boards left over from a renovation project.
Since the inside of the hatch will be difficult to sand due to the
"feet" in the T&G flooring I took extra efforts to clean up
any epoxy drips. I fond that a rag soaked in rubbing alcohol works well on
uncured epoxy.
Note added 5/6/07 - While the oak and fir parts looked good together, the different rate of contraction and expansion (and shrinkage) led to sizable cracks in some of the joints. I'll probably need to rebuild the hatch in a year or so, and will probably not be so fancy next time. I do still like the curved hatch top compared to the flat top in the plans so I will keep that aspect. In any case, be sure to build your hatch strong as you will need to stand on it to raise and lower the mast.

4 hrs | Sorry, no photos of this, but see the 11/22 entry for similar work on the aft hatch covers. |
10/21/04 | Cleaned up cabin top glue up - looks good so far. | 1 hr
10/22/04 | After much internal debate on how to
treat the CB pivot I've decided to use two 1/2" SS washers epoxied into
place on each side of the CB. The CB trunk will get the same treatment.
The pivot will be a 1/2" SS bolt.
Cut the lead hole and pivot hole into the CB. Sanded inside cabin, inserted washer bearings into CB trunk and glassed both sides of the trunk in the cabin. Used up the leftover epoxy patching the miscellaneous screw holes in the cabin. Also fit and screwed in place the rub rails and fit the cabin top trim. Sanded sliding hatch - this came out nicely! |

10/23/04 | Finished glassing CB trunk in cabin. Glued on
rub rails. Cut and laminated parts for the Jonesport cleat. Finished
fitting the cabin top trim and cockpit coaming trim. Stained these parts
with a colonial maple stain to approximate the color of the douglas fir
bright work. Sanded seat backs and motor well. Cut mizzen step
supports.
2" thick white oak is bloody expensive! I've decided to laminate 1x material to get the 1.5" thick pieces needed for the mizzen mast support and the motor mount. I've found some nice looking white oak step riser at the local big box lumber yard that I'll use. I finished the day by laminating the two pieces needed for the motor mount. |
8 hrs | |
10/24/04 | Sanded the cockpit seats. Shaped the Jonesport cleat. Varnished the cleat and other brightwork trim prior to installation. I'm not sure if pre-finishing these parts actually saved any time... | 7 hrs
10/25 - 27/04 | Additional varnish coats on the loose brightwork. | 2 hrs
10/30 - 31/04 | Glued on cabin top and cockpit coaming trim. Cut douglas fir plugs and plugged the rub rails. Ft and glued the toe rails. | 6 hrs |
|
11/7/04 | Plugged toe rails. Cut,fit, and glued up hatch board trim. Routed sliding hatch hold down slot. Rough cut hatch boards out of ply. I'm not real happy with the way the ply looks and am considering building up the hatch boards from solid wood. | 8 hrs
11/11/04 | Cut and fit sliding hatch hold down rails and refined the shape of the front hatch. Sanded hatch board trim, rub rails, and toe rails. Began final sanding. | 7 hrs
11/13/04 | Cut fit and glued on the upper CB case reinforcements (the 1.5x1.5 rails on the top of the CB trunk in the cockpit) and the cockpit footwell deck side supports. | 4 hrs
11/14/04 | Cut and fit aft coaming, mizzen step and support. Glassed the aft coaming prior to installation. Fooled around with the design of the aft hatches. | 5 hrs
11/15 -19/04 | Glassed aft motor well coaming, main & mizzen mast collars. | 2 hrs
11/21/04 | Cut hatches in aft volumes on either side of the motor well. Fit and installed motor mount brackets. Fit mizzen and rudder support. Cut and installed aft hatch coaming. Cut and glued up aft hatch cover framing. Glued aft motor well coaming in place. | 9 hrs
11/22/04 | Installed seat front drip edge and ventilation clam shells. Cut, fit, and installed planking for aft hatch covers. Glued up oak trim board for CB trunk. Cut and rough shaped tiller. Sanded aft hatch opening. Filleted motor well coaming. | 9 hrs
11/27/04 | Sanded aft hatch covers and CB trunk trim. | 3 hrs
