The Earth is warmest at the center and cooler farther out: An unstable situation because the warm material wants to rise towards the surface.

The Earth's mantle flows under steady driving forces. Convection cells carry hot mantle material towards the surface while colder material sinks back into the interior. Tectonic plates ride on top of these convection currents.
