I received my Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Indiana
University in 1989 working in the lab of Dr. Don Whitehead. I
trained
as a postdoctoral associate with Dr. Gene Likens at the
Institute of Ecosystem Studies. In 1993, I obtained a faculty position
at
the University of Louisville where I was promoted and given tenure
in 1999. While at Louisville, I served as the director of the
Center
for Watershed Research for the Kentucky Institute of the Environment
and Sustainable Development. In 1996, I received a Fulbright Scholarship
to Lithuania, where I was a senior research fellow of the Center
for Systems Analyses at Klaipeda University. I received a Gledden
Fellowship in 2002, which allowed me to spend a sabbatical at the
Centre for Water Research at the University of Western Australia.
In 2004, I joined the faculty of Virginia
Commonwealth University where I have a joint appointment in
the Department
of Biology and the Center
for Environmental Studies. My recruitment at VCU is part
of an effort to build a program in river biology at the Inger
and Walter Rice Center for Environmental Life Sciences.
