Study Design

Pregnant rats were implanted with minipumps that either delivered sterile water, 0.3 mg/kg/day or 1 mg/kg/day of buprenorphine. Then offspring were examined at 12, 19, or 26 days of age. The 0.3 mg/kg/day group is meant to represent therapeutic levels of buprenorphine and the 1 mg/kg/day group is meant to represent abuse or overexposure to buprenorphine. The ages at which the offspring were observed model the rapid myelination that occurs during the first two years of life in humans. Measurements were also taken at different ages to observe how myelin develops.
