I highly recommend the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain to anyone seriously interested in learning to draw. It is an excellent tutorial and creative resource for both the novice and accomplished artist.
I loved to draw when I was a child, but became discouraged early on when I constantly failed to reach the realism I desired. It wasn't until college when I was forced to take a series of prerequisite drawing courses that I finally learned the skill of seeing which had eluded me for so many years.
People sometimes ask me why I only draw girls and I tell them, "Show me anything more arresting than a beautiful woman and I'll draw it." In truth I'm taking advantage of our brains' predilection for faces, especially attractive ones, to give my sketches an additional cognitive impact.
