Dictation

Dictation can be very troublesome for many students, especially if it's the first time they've been asked to do it. The following are various activities or ideas that may help you or at least provide a little change of pace.

• Intervals
  • Songs for interval recognition - this is a common approach to learning the sound of intervals.

  • Practice doing dictation using the technique of "protonotation"
• Miscellaneous
  • Figure out the accents in that famous passage from Stravinsky's Rite of Spring.
  • Listen to a short excerpt by Corelli and notate it.
  • Transcribe the bass and soprano of this well-known passage from a Mozart Piano Concerto.
