#112 Herr, ich have misgehandelt - Bach

Listen: .mid

  1. Analyze this chorale and pay particular attention to chords with accidentals! Ask yourself the following questions about each vertical arrangement of notes (chords):
    • What is the root and quality of the chord that is spelled by these pitches?
    • What is the appropriate lead sheet symbol?
    • What scale degree is the root?
    • What is the "normal" quality for a chord built on this scale degree in minor?
      • hint: the normal qualities are: i ii° III iv V VI vii°
      • hint: MEMORIZE THIS!
    • If the chord you have is not consistent with the "normal" quality, why not?
      • hint: is one of the accidentals the raised 6th scale degree?
        • hint: figure out what the raised 6th scale degree is in this key and find it in the music. Also find the sub-tonics.
      • hint: we're using ascending melodic minor except for the minor v chord which has the lowered 7th scale degree (sub-tonic)
      • hint: the scalar variants in minor are: ii IV vi° VII (raised 6th scale degree) and v (lowered 7th which may show no accidental at all!)
    • Is your chord consistent with one of the scalar variants listed above?
    • If so, then you've got it!

Answers: Don't look at this until you have completed your own. I haven't labeled non-chord tones because it's too time consuming in Photoshop! There are some arguable alternative solutions which I'm sure some of you will favor and that's OK!
