Chapter 12
Variant qualities
#112 Herr, ich have misgehandelt - Bach
Listen: .mid
- Analyze this chorale and pay particular attention to chords
with accidentals! Ask yourself the following questions about each
vertical arrangement of notes (chords):
- What is the root and quality of the chord that is spelled
by these pitches?
- What is the appropriate lead sheet symbol?
- What scale degree is the root?
- What is the "normal" quality for a chord built
on this scale degree in minor?
- hint: the normal qualities are: i ii° III iv V VI
vii°
- hint: MEMORIZE THIS!
- If the chord you have is not consistent with the "normal"
quality, why not?
- hint: is one of the accidentals the raised 6th scale
degree?
- hint: figure out what the raised 6th scale degree
is in this key and find it in the music. Also find
the sub-tonics.
- hint: we're using ascending melodic minor except for
the minor v chord which has the lowered 7th scale degree
(sub-tonic)
- hint: the scalar variants in minor are: ii IV vi°
VII (raised 6th scale degree) and v (lowered 7th which
may show no accidental at all!)
- Is your chord consistent with one of the scalar variants
listed above?
- If so, then you've got it!
Answers: Don't look at this until you have completed your own.
I haven't labeled non-chord tones because it's too time consuming
in Photoshop! There are some arguable alternative solutions which
I'm sure some of you will favor and that's OK!
#113 Chaconne - Pachelbel
Listen: .mp3 .mid
- What is a chaconne? Use a music dictionary or go online to look
it up.
- The harmonic rhythm for this piece is basically how many chords
per measure?
- How many voices are there in this piece?
- Identify key, lead sheet symbols, roman numerals, non-chord
tones, etc.
- Which chords are not "normal" for this key? Explain
the source of the "abnormality" or variance.
- Notice how these chords are used in the progression. Remember.
- Describe the cadences and phrase relationships.
#115 Pavana - Byrd
- What's a Pavana (Pavanne)?
- Who is Byrd? Discount theater owner?
- Analyze key, chords, phrases, cadences, etc. All the usual stuff.
- Pay attention to the accidentals. What is their source (how
do they relate to this key)? How do they effect the chords?
- Notice how the variant chords are used. Remember.
