018.4 Tidal Friction

Because of friction between the tidal bulges and the rotating Earth, the bulges are shifted so that they actually lead the Moon's position.

Tidal friction is slowing the Earth's rotation. Eventually, the Earth will rotate once a month, with the same side always facing the Moon. Such a situation is called a tidal lock.
