018.1 The Tidal Effect

The average attraction of the Moon for the Earth keeps the Earth circling around the Earth-Moon center of mass.

With the average attraction subtracted, the effect of the Moon's gravity is to pull the tides up on two sides and squeeze them down on the other two sides.

This stretching and squeezing distortion is characteristic of gravitational fields everywhere. It is called a tidal effect.
