Reduced Particles MAA Worksheet

Name _____Larry Particular______________

  1. Dilute MAA vial with 5 mL of saline. Withdraw a 1 mL aliquot and place it in a 30 mL sterile empty vial.
Calculate the total # of particles in the 1 mL aliquot:
  2. Problem: From a 4.5 million particle vial of MAA administer 75k particles in 1.5 mCi (55.5 MBq) to a pediatric patient.

Total particles in MAA vial = ____4,500,000_________

  3. Calculate total volume needed to make the kit of reduced particles (all contents go into a 30 mL sterile vial).  12 mL dilutes solution to 75,000 particles/mL
  4. Calculate the activity of 99mTc-volume required for patient dose. See dose ranges.
  5. Patient dose in mCi x total volume (mL in step 2) define total amount of 99mTc required in vial.
Adult dose is usually 3.5 mCi, however, pediatric dose must be specified by the physician.
    Total activity is determined below:

  6. From the elution vial determine the amount of activity/mL required from 99mTc activity elution and add it to the 30 mL vial.
  7. Incubate for 15 minutes. Smaller particle amount may require up to 30 minutes incubation.

  8. Calculate the volume of normal saline required to dilute the MAA so that it draw 1.5 mCi/mL from the 30 mL vial.
  9. Complete TLC on the final product.
  10. From the above data 1 mL delivers 1.5 mCi in 75,000 particles.
