About
the picture:
In the early years of the 20th century, the revolutionary scientific
and mathematical ideas of relativity and multi-dimensional geometry
captured the popular imagination. Some art historians say these undercurrents
helped inspire an artistic revolution. Abandoning the classical rendering
of three-dimensional space, a group of artists that came to be called
the Cubists created works with fragmented images and multiple
view planes. This 1912 work, "Guitar on a Table," by Pablo
Picasso is an example.
The multi-dimensional geometry that so intrigued the Cubists eventualy
evolved into the subject of linear algebra that we study in this course.
