MATH 601 | Abstract Algebra I |
VCU, Fall 2015 |
The first half of MATH 601 entails a careful study of groups. Some of our most useful examples are sets of rigid motions (or symmetries) of geometric objects. For example, the dihedral groups are the sets of symmetries of polygons. Frieze patterns are another type of geometric object, often seen in architecture. The examples here are from Richmond's Landmark Theater, just a block from our classroom. Every frieze pattern has a group of symmetries. Three examples shown here have a symmetry group that is isomorphic to the infinite cyclic group Z. Another has group Z × Z/2Z. Can you identify it? |
