Abstract. I will give a brief history of the field of Mathematical Biology and highlight the range of current research in the field as surveyed at recent conferences.  I will give some specific examples of research at VCU and then discuss my various research projects, including the role of inflammation in wound healing and in chronic diseases, flow modeling in the respiratory system, and modeling the firing of a nematocyst.
