Mathematical Origami
Abstract: Where the ancient Greek mathematicians restricted
their use of tools to the straightedge and compass, a similar reliance on
simplicity is necessary to make geometric observations using only a sheet of
paper. A brief introduction into the art of paper folding will serve as a
foundation for an explanatory presentation on the mathematical value of
origami. We will see how a formally axiomatized method has many benefits,
including a hands on approach to learning fundamental geometry with an
interactive proof medium. We will discuss the potential of further
developing this technique, by giving examples of its current use and
possible areas of application for the future.
