Visit a museum or gallery and find a work of art which uses mathematics in a substantial way. Alternatively, interview an artist about the use of mathematics in their work (provided that the mathematical content is significant). Write a brief paper or commentary about what you learned. (One or two pages of text, plus photos if available.)
- Address the historical or social context (if applicable).
- Explain the mathematical context (how mathematics is involved).
- Include photos of work if available or appropriate.
- Your grade will be based on the usual standards of collegiate writing.
You may use the Web to obtain a photo, if necessary, and to obtain details not available through other sources. But please avoid using the Internet for additional information. Remember: The Web is plagued by Information Sprawl, and low-density knowldege. It invites broad surveys of information, lacking depth. Think 1957.
The paper is due at the beginning of class on November 25.
