DID YOU PARTICIPATE IN THE STUDY ENTITLED
"YOUR PERCEPTIONS OF PSYCHOLOGY INTERNSHIPS?"
Doctoral students in clinical and counseling psychology programs are required to complete a year-long predoctoral internship, in which they engage in the practice of professional psychology. This study examines how current Psychology Interns view the range of available predoctoral internship opportunities.
The process of researching, interviewing for, and ultimately accepting placement at an internship site mirrors the processes of researching, interviewing for, and accepting a first job. A wide variety of training opportunities are available at over 400 sites across the country. However, little is know about how individuals s go about choosing a specific type of training site, and which personal variables impact that choice. This research effort investigates current Interns' perceptions of the various types of internship opportunities, and the factors they consider in making their internship choice.
APPIC defines a number of Internship "types." These include:
Community Mental Health Centers
Public Hospitals
Child/Adolescent Psychiatric Facilities
Private Hospitals
Consortia
Counseling Centers
Corrections-Related Facilities
Veterans Affairs Medical Centers
Armed Forces Medical Centers
Medical Schools
Our study uses the pair comparison technique, so participants were asked to indicate BOTH their preferences for, and perceptions of, pairs of internship "types," like:
Community Mental Health Centers --and-- Public Hosptials
