My GLBT Research Archive

Welcome to my research archive. As part of my ongoing committment to return my work to the GLBTIQQ community, all of my research is made available for free download. However, as is always the case, there are a few legal rules. All published papers are copyrighted by their respective publishers. Hence any use of the material in these articles must be cited appropriately. All submitted papers must be cited with reference to this website. • The Tao of Gender

     Paperback or Hardback

What one person said about the book

"I met this author at a national conference... what a powerful and gentle person! This book is a gentle meditation on the journey that transgender people undertake. It awoke my compassion and inspired me to think about gender as a fluid experience rather than a designation written in stone at birth. I have continued after reading this book and meeting the author, to think about my own prejudices and fears on the subject and how spirituality unites us all in a search for an authentic self. I am inspired by the courage of transgender people and intersex people who travel a road that must at times be so lonely and terrifying. I love the fact that Dr. Witten talks about surgical changes to the body is just the beginning of the journey and not the end; that external changes are always to some extent an "illusion" for us all and we are still left with the internal struggle for a sense of self that is integrated. Thank you Dr. Witten for your courage and the passionate sharing of your wisdom and experience. You have made a lasting positive impression on my life."
  • Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Aging: Challenges in Research, Practice and Policy

    Hardback, Softback and E-book

What are they saying about this book

"Witten and Eyler have written an immensely comprehensive overview of aging for sexual and gender minorities, outlining clinical, research, and policy issues within the context of life cycle development. A much-needed and long-awaited resource, this book delineates issues facing LGBTI persons, their families, and caregivers."— Arlene Lev, LCSW, University at Albany

"This book contains a special wisdom: it articulates the disparities aging LBGTI people face, and—more importantly—it illuminates areas of specialized knowledge that urgently deserve wider attention."— Jamison Green, PhD, author of Becoming a Visible Man

"This book merits serious attention for its empirical breadth and theoretical compass. By using gerontological constructs (such as resilience and cultural/structural lag), Witten, Eyler and their collaborators underscore the importance of multidimensional, life-course perspectives to understand the stories, needs, and demands of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and intersexed persons."— W. Andrew Achenbaum, University of Houston

"This integrative text addresses the unique problems of sexual and gender minorities as aging individuals. Developed to meet the needs of health and human service professionals, the book opes with an overview of aging in this population, followed by a chapter addressing current trends in informal caregiving, loss of independence, social networking, and access to quality services. There is an intuitive blend of empirical data and documented (negative) experiences and expressions of profound fear among these aging individuals. For each cohort, the editors and chapter contributors provide a detailed discussion, followed by an extensive bibliography. Because of its uniqueness, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Aging -- which has few or no comparable titles -- can be described as a bibliographic Venn diagram. This integrated view of aging and szexual and gender minorities fills a major gap in the collective knowledge of and cultural responsiveness to these invisible communities. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, researchers/faculty, and professionals/practitioners."- L.R. Barley, York College, CUNY.
