What is Cancer?

Cancer is a group of more than 100 different diseases, each with it's own personality.

It can be a slow growing, sleepy lapdog, or it can grow very quickly and aggressively.

Normally, cells grow, divide, and produce more cells as they are needed to keep the body healthy.

BUT...sometimes this process can go haywire and cells keep dividing even when new cells are not needed.

The extra, un-needed cells clump together and form a growth which is also known as a tumor.

Tumors can be either:

Benign - This tumor is not cancerous and does not spread. It can be removed and typically will not come back.

or

Malignant - This tumor is cancerous. The cells in this tumor divide abnormally without any control or order and can invade and destroy the parts of the body around them. The cells can also break away from the tumor, ride through the circulatory system, and implant in new areas of the body. This process is also known as metastasis.

Cancer cells are like parasites.

They take up space, devour nourishment, and crowd out normal cells.

They exist only to eat and reproduce.

They have no biological function.

And the question remains....How do we stop them?
