Bold Tutorial

1. What you will learn

    1.1 How to get on-line help on the Mentor tools using the Bold Browser.

2. Getting started

    2.1 This tutorial describes the process of getting help on the Mentor Graphics tools using the on-line document server called the Bold Browser. The Bold Browser allows you to view and search the complete set of Mentor Graphics documentation in electronic form.

    For tools such as Design Architect there generally is a detailed tutorial, usually called "Getting Started in Design Architect", a User's manual, and a Reference Manual. The Mentor Graphics tutorials are similar to the one you may have already done on Design Architect and Quicksim, although the ones provided by Mentor Graphics are much more in depth. The User's manual has descriptions of the commands available in the tool and how to invoke them using menu items, ant the Reference Manual generally has detailed information on tool features for advanced users.

    2.3 Start the Mentor Graphics Bold Browser tool (the ampersand [&] puts the tool in the background so your prompt comes back and you can use that shell for other commands):

>> bold -color &

You will see a number of statements printed out in the window where you started Bold somewhat like those below:

    // BOLD Browser v8.6_1.5 Sun Oct 26 15:22:30 PST 1997

You should also see a new BOLD window like the one shown below appear on the screen:

    2.4 Click on the Cancel button in the Open Document from Bookcase dialog box to remove it from the Bold window. Use the Setup->Page Layout... menu item from the pull-down menus at the top of the window to bring up the Setup Page Layout dialog box, as shown below:
    Set the Number of pages to view item to 2 pages, the Rate to turn pages item to 2, the Page Scale (%) item to 95, and the View Scrool Bars? item to Yes. Click the OK button to close the dialog box.

3. Open the needed document

    3.1 Make the Bold window larger using the mouse, and then use the File->Open->Document... menu item to bring up the Open Document dialog box, as shown below:

    You can now scroll through the entire list of available documents in alphabetical order. Scroll down to the Getting Started with Design Architect book, select it, and click the OK button. You should see the selected document open up the first page, and your BOLD window will now look like the one below:

    The button on the top left-hand side of the document window will take you to the document's table of contents, and the buttons on the top right-hand side of the document window will move you backwards and forwards through the document, two pages at a time. You can also move through the document many pages at a time using the scroll bar. For documents which have an index (this one does not), a button will appear on the top left-hand side of the document window which will take you there.

    3.2 Move the document to Table of Contents using the button. Notice that the cursor changes to a "hand" symbol when you place it over the table of contents items in blue. Place the cursor over the Opening a Schematic Sheet item in the Module 2 section of the table of contents and click the left mouse button. The document window will move to that section of the document as shown below:

    All of the Mentor Graphics documents are hyperlinked together like this. In fact, if there is a hyperlink (shown in blue) in a given document that points to a section in another document, the Bold Browser will automatically open the second document and move to that section if you click on the hyperlink.

    3.3 When you are finished looking at the current document, you can close its' window and open another document using the File->Open->Document... menu item as above, or exit the Bold Browser using the MGC->Exit menu item.
