Yes, it is copyrighted. | Yes, you can use it. | No, you can not sell it. |
Although this site is completely open to public access, it is NOT placed in the public domain and there are some limitations on what you can do with it. These limitations are pretty obvious and should go without saying but I will say them anyway: Here are the terms of use. |
Copyright 1998, Robert H. Gowdy (Portions earlier as marked) Except for a few photographs and portrait images (described below), all of the material on this site is the original creation of Robert H. Gowdy who retains all rights to control its dissemination and create derivative works from it. The portrait images used on this site come from various web sites. The Kneller portrait of a youthful Isaac Newton came from Harry Nelson's "Images of Famous Physicists". Most of the other portraits came from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive and are linked directly to that site. A rendering of the Titanic disaster by J. Clary is copyrighted material, which is used here with the permission of the artist. The photographs of Richmond during the Civil War are from the LIbrary of Congress Collection, Selected Civil War Photographs 1861-1865 and are unrestricted. |
Fair use of this web-site for learning or teaching physics is, of course, permitted. My interpretation of "fair use" includes links to any part of this site, downloading all or part of the material and re linking it to make it fit into your course syllabus. You need not ask my permission for this type of use although I would like to hear from you anyway. If you intend to incorporate these web modules into a course which will be in use for more than a year or if you intend to make extensive modifications to these modules, please send an e-mail request for permission to rhgowdy@vcu.edu. Ordinarily I will grant the permission by return e-mail subject to the condition that you include an appropriate acknowledgement in your course materials. |
For-profit activities which make use of materials from this web-site require the written permission of Robert H. Gowdy. For example, I most definitely do not want to discover a great new physics textbook whose promotional web-site includes images taken from this one without permission. |
