001.5 The Path of the Sun

The stars that are near the sun may be seen just after sunset or just before sunrise.
Stars coming out near the sun after sunset.
Those stars locate the position of the sun on a map of the stars, on the Celestial Sphere.

The path of the sun on the Celestial Sphere is a great circle, called the ecliptic.

The sun moves eastward along the ecliptic by about 1° per day, circling back to its starting point after one year.

Any object near the plane of the earth's orbit, and that includes most objects in our Solar System, will appear near the ecliptic in the sky.
