Modelling cell adhesion in development and disease
Abstract
Cell-cell and cell-matrix adhesion are key processes in many developmental and pathological process. I will describe a new mathematical model for adhesion, of nonlocal (integrodifferential equation) form. I will demonstrate the ability of the model to reproduce standard in vitro experimental results on the sorting of disassociated cell populations. I will then describe the application of the model to two problems: somite formation in early development, and the progression of a solid tumour from non-invasive to invasive phenotype. The talk is intended for a broad audience, and will be accessible to those from both mathematical and biological backgrounds.
