Periodic Environments: Helpful or Harmful?
Abstract
Discrete periodic dynamical systems are used to model changing environments. A structure theorem is developed to compare the attractor of autonomous systems with periodic ones. Under specific conditions the p-periodic system will have p copies of the attractor of the autonomous system. When the attractor for the autonomous system is the stable carrying capacity, a signature function is developed to predict the helpful or harmful effects of a changing environment.
