ABOUT ME: Hello world! My name is Tom
McFadden and I am a sophomore music major at VCU.
I am originally from the Washington, DC area and
am the first in my family to pursue a career in
music. I graduated from Paul IV Catholic High
School in Fairfax, VA, where I played horn and
trumpet in the PVI Wind Ensemble. At VCU, I have
played with a BUNCH of different ensembles,
including the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the VCU
Symphony Orchestra, two brass quintets, a horn
trio, and now, the VCU Jazz Orchestra II…. YES,
you CAN play jazz on the horn!! I have a pretty
open mind towards any type of music, but my
favorite ‘horn-related’ pieces are Strauss’
Andante, Mahler’s 1st and 8th symphonies, the
Mozart horn concerti, and some of Ken Wiley’s
solo works. What do I love most about VCU? The
people I get to work (and play) with.
