This is the first general treatise on measuring instruments for astronomy and surveying. The figure below illustrates a solar quadrant, used to tell time by sighting the altitude of the sun and then reading the time of day from the appropriate scale. Each quadrant would have been designed and calibrated for a particular angle of latitude.
