I'm originally from Illinois (anyone ever been to Peoria?) and received my bachelor's degree from Knox College in 1967 (a fine liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois - even more obscure than Peoria!). My undergraduate major was Political Science, but I wanted to study social science on a broader scale, so I went to the University of Denver and received a Ph.D. in Sociology in 1974. I came to VCU the same year, during a time when the university was expanding rapidly after its creation in 1968. I've worked in several research areas over the years - social demography, sociology of leisure, environmental sociology, sociology of sexualities, and sociology of HIV/AIDS. Currently, I'm active only in the latter two. I conduct most of my research as a senior faculty research associate half time in the Survey and Evaluation Research Laboratory. See Recent Research for some highlights of my current/recent projects. Much of my teaching has been in the research methods and statistics areas. I am currently teaching two courses in Sociology/Anthropology - SOCY/POLI 320 (research methods for undergraduate sociology majors) and SOCY 602 (a master's level research methods and statistics course).
