Political career:

• Named to the Norfolk School Board in 1959.

• Served in the House of Delegates from 1964 to 1971.

• Served in the Virginia State Senate from 1972 to 2000.

• Elected president pro tempore by the Senate in 1988.

• Was an advocate for public education, colleges and universities, day care, health care coverage for poor children and the victims of sexual assault.

• Lost his bid for re-election in 1999.

Died: Jan. 15, 2001, in Norfolk
