The Virginia Beer Wholesalers Association spread $88,804 in donations among 120 legislators during the 1999 election cycle. The group was No. 27 among contributors to members of the General Assembly.
Of the total, $50,854 went to 88 House members and $37,950 to 32 senators.
Among the parties, the beer wholesalers kept the money nearly even. Republicans received $45,254, Democrats managed $42,800 and Independent Delegate Lacey Putney got $750.
Top recipients included:
Sen. Richard Saslaw, D-Springfield - $3,500.
Delegate Richard Cranwell, D-Vinton - $2,750.
Sen. Martin E. Williams, R-Newport News; Sen. Yvonne Miller, D-Norfolk; and Sen. Janet Howell, D-Reston - $2,250 each.
