It brings to one place the genomic, metabolic, and experimental data of interest to a research community.   It provides commonly used tools, accessible through a common interface, with the results of one tool understandable by another.   It allows access through a graphical language that incorporates concepts of molecular biology and that is immediately intelligible to a researcher.
