VCU Symposium on Applied Bioinformatics

History

Inspired by the precept that the process of science can be understood only by engaging in that process, undergraduate students in Virginia Commonwealth University's Introduction to Bioinformatics course have participated in research projects that take up half the semester. During the first two years, research projects were collaborations with a researcher somewhere in the world, focusing on a question concerning cyanobacterial molecular biology. From the third year onward, all participants have collaborated on the same project-- the analysis of viral metagenomes isolated from somewhere in the world. In all cases, a primary aim has been to add to our understanding of nature using the tools of bioinformatics. The Symposium has provided a forum for the dissemination of the fruits of those efforts.
