My advice on the matters for the day (as listed in the calendar):
- Analysis of research proposals. You can gain inspiration for your research proposal by considering the efforts of past participants. Take a look at a few from the four web sites linked from the calendar (years 2014-2018), summarizing a published experiment enough so that you think you've found at least one good example of the genre and one bad example. The criteria are the same as for a summary of a published experiment (given that of course you will have only anticipated result possibilities). Read them with the idea that you will be ready to present to others illustrative good and bad features.
- Summaries: Please review the poster you presented October 1, in light of what you may have learned about how to present an experiment.
I. Basic Information
- Your name
II. Old business
(no need to repeat anything you've said in a previous questionnaire)
- Crick et al (1961) and its simulation
Drawing on the companion to Crick (1961) and the simulation, any concerns about:
- How the T4 RII/E.coli system works to enable the identification of mutant phages?
- How to use the simulation to generate suppressor mutations?
- How to separate mutation pairs and map mutations?
- The need for a genetic map and the benefit and possibility of community effort?
- Problem Set 5
Issues regarding any question on Problem Set 5?
- Jones & Nirenberg (1962) Survey of RNA codewords
Taking into account the companion to Jones and Nirenberg (1962), any concerns about how their experiment works? How to rationalize the minus polynucleotide control? How polynucleotides are made? How to calculate expected frequencies? Any other issues?
III. Analysis of prior research proposals
A. What proposal did you find (author and year) that illustrated some good features. What were the features?
B. What proposal did you find (author and year) that illustrated some bad features. What were the features?
C. Considering these proposals, what issues do you see regarding your own proposal?
IV. Miscellaneous
Any other comments, questions, suggestions, or concerns you may have?
Thanks!
