Thoughts on Finding a Mentor
(please press SUBMIT button when finished)
Fall 2019

(This instrument if for those who need it.
If you and I agree that you have found a good candidate mentor, then there's no need to return this survey.
On the other hand, if this survey can help you move forward or can help me see where you are so that I can help you move forward, then please go for it.)

  1. Your name

  2. What specific strategies have you employed to search for a mentor?
If you've searched databases or web sites, provide the specific search terms you used.
Have you looked at help in How To Find A Candidate Mentor?

  3. What names have you come up with?
List at least one research article per name (of course give a full reference).

  4. What leads you to believe that this person or these people work in a research area related to molecular biology?
(understand that by "molecular biology" I don't mean a description of a phenomenon or testing whether some molecule is clinically effective, but the study of how some biological machine works at the molecular level)
Have you tried to understand at least one experiment in an article published by them? What article? What experiment? Is it molecular?

  5. What help do you think you may need to find a mentor?

  6. If you're at the stage where you're considering contacting a mentor candidate, have you looked at help on How to Contact a Prospective Mentor?
Please provide below a draft of a message you are considering sending your candidate mentor.

  7. When you reach the point of sending a message to your mentor prospect, copy me so that I can follow up with a message of my own, explaining the nature of the course and the research proposal.

    Thanks!
