Questionnaire on: Jones and Nirenberg (1961) Nature of the Genetic Code (2)
(please press SUBMIT button when finished)
Fall 2018

My advice on the matters for the day (as listed in the calendar):

  • Jones & Nirenberg (1962): Here's your chance to make sure you can make sense of any of the tables in this article and make a reasonable stab at analyzing their results, guided by the companion.

  • Alien Genetic Code: If you like, you can try doing the Jones & Nirenberg experiment yourself, using the Alien Genetic Code simulation. If you run into technical problems, rejoice! We'll go over the simulation on Tuesday.

  • Problem Set 5: Bring whatever questions you may have regarding any problem in Problem Set 5.

  • Research Proposal:
    • Creating a website: If you're translating an article, give it a try. We'll address problems in class.
    • Summaries: I'll take you through the nature of a summary of a published experiment, both its nature and how to do it.
    • Old proposals: If you're writing a proposal, you might at some point look at some previous efforts.

I. Basic Information

A. Your name
II. Old business
  1. Jones & Nirenberg (1962) Survey of RNA codewords
Taking into account the companion to Jones and Nirenberg (1962), any concerns about how their experiment works? How to rationalize the minus polynucleotide control? How polynucleotides are made? How to calculate expected frequencies? Any other issues?

  2. Problem Set 5?
Any specific problems bedeviling you in Problem Set 5? If so, relate what you have done, what obstacle you've encountered, and in what ways you've tried to overcome it.

  3. Research proposal?
    Progress? Problems?

III. Alien Genetic Code

  • Have you given Alien Genetic Code a try?
  • Encountered any technical difficulties?
  • Do you see how the tools you have at your disposal are the same used by Jones and Nirenberg?
  • Progress in breaking the code?

IV. Miscellaneous
Any other comments, questions, suggestions, or concerns you may have?
(nb. Issues concerning your proposal are always welcome)

Thanks!
