Questionnaire on: Belasco et al (1985) - Part II
(please press SUBMIT button when finished)
Fall 2018

My advice on the matters for the day (as listed in the calendar):

  • Belasco et al (1985): The goal is, having gained a basic, general understanding of S1 protection experiments (you're on your own for that), to use the companiont (Part II) to gain a specific understanding of the procedure as it applies specifically to Figure 2 (right panel) of Belasco et al. The companion will guide you how to see the experiment through the lens of the genome sequence of Rhodopseudomonas capsulatus.

  • Semester project: You'll be entertained by sample presentations and discussions in class. No need for you to do anything beforehand, though looking at How to give a presentation focused on an experiment wouldn't hurt.

I. Basic Information

A. Your name
II. Old business
  1. Belasco et al (1985), Part I
Any parting thoughts concerning issues raised by Belasco et al (1985) and matters brought up in its companion (Part I)? For example:
    • The question you are directing at this article and the biology behind the question
    • The nature of an operon
    • The process of skimming an article to decide what part of it to read

III. Belasco et al (1985), Part II

A. How far have you gotten in this article and its companion (Part II)?

B. Consider how comfortable you are with the following topics regarding these matters:

  • The elements of the S1-protection experiment in this article
  • Use of BioBIKE to investigate genome of R. capsulatus
  • Equating Belasco et al's Fig. 1 with the genome sequence obtained from BioBIKE
  • Identification of restriction sites (e.g. EcoRI)
  • Interpreting Fig. 2 from Belasco et al
  • Interpreting Fig. 4 from Belasco et al

IV. Miscellaneous
Any other comments, questions, suggestions, or concerns you may have? Issues concerning your research proposal are particularly invited.

Thanks!
