Fall 2018

My advice on the matters for the day (as listed in the calendar):

  • Brenner et al (1961): If you haven't gotten the principle of the main experimental procedure of Brenner et al (1961), now is the time (Section B2 of the companion should be useful for this). In addition, the goal now is to understand the results in light of the experiment (Section B3).

  • Problem Set 7: Question 3 of Problem Set 7 tests your understanding of the experiments of Brenner et al (1961). Try it out when you're ready. Also, if you care to examine (through Questions 1 and 2) Belozersky and Spirin (1958), one of the underpinnings of Brenner et al (1961), feel free to bring to class any issues that arise.

I. Basic Information

A. Your name
II. Old business
  1. Brenner et al (1961) - the experiment
Regarding Brenner et al (1961) and its companion, do you understand the three hypotheses they were trying to test? Do you understand the principle behind the density shift experiment(s) they performed?

III. Brenner et al (1961) - the results

A. Have you gotten the full text of the article? If so, how far have you gotten in it (and its companion)?

B. Consider how comfortable you are with the following topics regarding these matters:

  • How to understand Figure 2 of Brenner et al (1961)?
  • How the remaining figures differ from Figure 2?
  • How to understand Figure 6 of Brenner et al (1961) (the heart of the article)?
  • Anything else?

IV. Miscellaneous
Any other comments, questions, suggestions, or concerns you may have?
(nb. Issues concerning your proposal are always welcome)
