My advice on the matters for the day (as listed in the calendar):
- Crick (1961) et al: Make use of whatever resources you need to understand how this complicated experiment works, including the article, the companion, the simulation (or its graphical alternative), and/or Problem 3 of Problem Set 5. Do whatever works for you, but do something.
- Research Proposal: I'll take you through the ways to get at old proposals and old summaries. We'll discuss old proposals -- what's good about them and what's not -- in the near future.
I. Basic Information
A. Your name
II. Old business
- Crick et al (1961) and the triplet code
Regarding the companion to Crick (1961), any concerns
about mutagenesis by acridines? Recombination between two phages? The nature of suppressor mutations? How to
construct multiply mutant phages? What the double and triple mutants say about the genetic code?
Issues concerning the simulation and Problem Set 5, Questions 5 and 6?
- Research proposal?
Progress? Problems?
III. Jones & Nirenberg (1962) Survey of RNA codewords
A. How far have you gotten in Jones & Nirenberg (1962) (and its
companion)?
The
Alien Genetic Code simulation?
B. Consider how comfortable you are with the following topics regarding these matters:
- The overall goal of the work by Nirenberg and others
- The specific focus of Jones & Nirenberg (1961)
- The nature of the experiment
- The nature of RNA produced by polynucleotide phosphorylase
- Theoretical expectations of experiment J108, Table 3
- Interpretation of Table 3
- How in principle to deduce the alien genetic code
- How to use Alien Genetic Code within BioBIKE
IV. Miscellaneous
Any other comments, questions, suggestions, or concerns you may have?
(nb. Issues concerning your proposal are always welcome)
Thanks!
