Detecting a stealth anthrax toxin gene The truth behind Blast
Has Blast gone crazy?
Yes indeedy, for here are the results.
Let's very carefully put Blast in a corner where it can calculate some nice square roots by itself, so we can discuss matters in a rational fashion.

Sequence 1 Product DG47
Sequence 2 Bacillus lef gene
No significant similarity
|
In brief, here's what's happened:
- When you translate this DNA sequence, it is 100% identical to anthrax toxin.
- When you compare the sequence by eye to the lef gene (encoding part of
the anthrax toxin), it is almost identical.
- When you ask Blast, the most heavily used program in all of bioinformatics,
to do the same comparison of the two DNA fragments, it finds nothing.
