Gender History & Theory
This course is intended to orient students in a rapidly changing field: to introduce gender and feminism as both subjects and methods. We will consider some of the classics—and classic debates—in the field on topics including religion, the household, capitalism and the gender division of labor, sexuality, and subjectivity. These subjects will allow us to examine what the problems raised in gender history reveal about debates over theory and method in the discipline of history overall. Finally, we look at what new directions in gender history imply for social and cultural history broadly speaking.
This class covers these subjects as they have been analyzed by scholars of both American and European history.
