Do you remember enharmonic spelling? Well, since there are two ways (sometimes more) to spell the same pitch, there will also be two ways to create a half step. If the notes are written on successive lines and spaces (different letter names), the half step is considered diatonic. If the same note is repeated with an accidental (same letter name), then the half step is chromatic:
