                                        APPM 165 - AURAL SKILLS I

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The following skills will be introduced in class and then mastered by the students!

a.   Rhythm reading using all beat values.  Duple, triple, and quadruple divisions.

b.   Sight singing using “moveable do” solfege.  Stepwise motion and leaps in tonic triad.  Major keys only.

c.    Interval identification.  All intervals ascending only.

d.   Scale identification.  Major, all forms of minor.

e.   Chord identification.  Major, minor, diminished, augmented in any inversion.

f.    Melodic dictation.  Mostly stepwise motion.  Skips in I and V.

g.   Harmonic dictation.  Two chord progressions in major and minor.

 

TEXTS:      Music for Sight Singing by Robert Ottman and MacGAMUT dictation software. Both are available at Carriage House texts on Harrison St.

FINAL EXAM: The final exam is scheduled for Tuesday, May 6 from 9-11:50 am in your regular classroom.

 

ATTENDANCE: You will be permitted 3 absences for the semester.  There will be no excused absences of any type so please be very prudent about your attendance.  You may want to save up your days off for unexpected illness, post-party recovery, etc.  Each absence over three will result in the lowering of your final grade by half a letter.
