President of MCV Physicians, the clinical practice plan for more than 600 physicians from 2003-08. Author of more than 500 publications, the editor of five textbooks and the lead editor of A Guide for Infection Control in the Hospital. Distinguished teacher - trained 50 hospital epidemiologists worldwide. The work has focused on the epidemiology of hospital-acquired infections, especially bloodstream infections (BSIs) and sepsis A nationally recognized expert on antibiotic resistance and its impact. |

For many years a member of the editorial board of The New England Journal of Medicine, and is the journal’s first Editor-at-Large (2001-present). A member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI), the Association of American Physicians (AAP) and a charter member of the Surgical Infections Society. A former president of the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) and former councillor of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA). In March 2004 named President-elect (2004-06) of the International Society for Infectious Diseases. In 2006-08 he was the President of the Society. |
